Weird Canadian History Fact

In the 1600’s Catholics abstain from eating warm-blooded animals on Fridays and during Lent. Thus, Fish Friday began. New World winters meant fish was not always available. The Bishop of Quebec was granted a special decree allowed Catholics in the New World to eat beaver and muskrat in lieu of fish. In South America, Catholics ate Capybara on Fridays and during Lent if fish was not available.

The Church decreed that aquatic animals were the same as fish. Weird.
